Technician in Crop Protection

NIAB is a dynamic, research led and market driven plant bioscience organisation, with an emphasis on innovative applications for end-users in the agricultural, horticultural and food sectors. NIAB EMR, based in Kent, focuses on perennial fruit crops with over 100 years of innovative, strategic, and applied research in this sector working closely with a range of stakeholders including industry.

We wish to appoint a Laboratory and Field Technician to work on several Innovate UK and commercially funded R&D projects. The role will support the development of new devices, software, and machines relating to Precision Technology in Agriculture/Horticulture. These exciting projects are at the forefront of new technologies being used or that will be used in modern agri and horticultural production, working alongside commercial companies involved in these areas.

The post is based in the Pest and Pathology Ecology Department at NIAB EMR in Kent and the responsibility will primarily be in providing technical support to research leaders in the delivery of currently held projects. The technician will be line managed by Research Scientists and assisted by the whole team. The successful applicant must be able to work as part of an enthusiastic team.

The essential requirements are a minimum of a BSc qualification or other qualifications applicable to agriculture or horticulture, and prior experience in coordinating and delivery of agri-/horticulture research and development. The role requires good attention to detail and accuracy, application of Good Laboratory Practices, willingness to work with prototype software, devices and machines, willingness to drive small tractors and undertake work on commercial farms. The applicant should have a strong interest in both laboratory work and field work, and precision technologies. A full UK driving licence is essential as you will need to be able to travel to farms to carry out experiments. Experience of driving a tractor is also desirable.

You should show evidence of good organisational and communication skills, and a proven ability to work effectively within a team and independently. This is a fixed term position until March 2022, with the possibility of extension.

The salary for this role is in the range of £20,091 to £23,856 per annum, dependent on skills, experience, and qualifications.
