Apple Breeding Consortium
A new EMR Apple Breeding Consortium, comprising of East Malling Services, Worldwide Fruit Ltd and ENZA, have initiated a new dessert apple breeding programme, based at East Malling, UK. Underpinned by pre-breeding expertise from the Harrison lab at EMR the programme aims to produce high quality dessert apples, which combine excellent fruit quality, storage and flavour and desirable agronomic traits for high density, low-input production.
- Selection of promising seedlings with particular attention to progenies combining main season fruiting with storage ability and excellent overall fruit quality, which includes shape, colour, flavour, texture and aroma.
- Tree architecture, ability to mechanically thin, prune and maintain a good vegetative/floral balance are important for modern cropping systems and improved grower profitability
- Resistance to canker is an important primary objective while apple scab and mildew are important secondary pathogen resistance targets
- Resistance to aphids and other pests are further secondary objectives
