Promoting ‘Malling™ Centenary’ in Europe
Expose is an international trade fair that was held on 16-17 November in Karlsruhe, Southern Germany. It is the largest soft fruit (and asparagus!) trade show in Germany, attended by over 7,000 participants and 430 exhibitors with record numbers of attendees this year. I had the opportunity to make a presentation on the successful NIAB-EMR variety ‘Malling™ Centenary’, giving an update on how it’s easy of picking, high fruit quality and high percentage class 1 are having a dramatic effect on reducing growers’ costs. There was very good feedback from the many growers who have tried it in this territory and who were willing to know more about the variety.
Following on from this ‘Malling™ Centenary’ was also promoted at the Swedish Soft Fruit Conference held at Hook, Southern Sweden on 29-30th November. This conference was attended by over 170 participants from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Holland, Italy, Norway and of course Sweden with 30 exhibitors also attending. It was clear from the meeting that the traditional open-filed, matted-row approach to growing strawberries is changing quickly, as in Germany, so the development of varieties such as ‘Malling™ Centenary’ is very timely for this territory.
