Pollinators, Predators and Productivity

This farm walk will showcase the latest research from NIAB-EMR, University of Worcester and Wildflowers DSC03477 (M Mckerchar)collaborators, on managing the orchard environment for quality fruit production.

 

The event is hosted by Chandler & Dunn Ltd and the afternoon will include an orchard walk looking at the advantages of wildflowers in apples followed by a discussion and poster session, with displays and exhibits on the benefits of earwigs, hoverflies and other integrated pest management solutions.

 

Main Speakers:

Megan McKerchar (University of Worcester) – Managing wildflower strips in orchards at Chandler and Dunn – benefits to pollinators and beneficial insects – environmental and economic value

Michelle Fountain (NIAB EMR) – AHDB-funded research on the use of mating disruption techniques for moths to increase natural biocontrol of other pests – plus future prospects for speeding up the ecology of newly planted orchards

Dylan Hodgkiss (NIAB EMR and RHUL) – Importance of hoverflies as predators and pollinators in crops – efficacy and encouraging into crops

 

Poster Session/Short talks:

Short talks from Rachel McDonald (Centre for Agri-Environment Research, School of Agriculture, University of Reading) – Earwig numbers in orchards in relation to semi-natural/natural habitat features.

Charlotte Shelvey (University College London and Institute of Zoology at ZSL – Measuring avian predation rates on artificial caterpillars in orchards under differing management techniques

Sean Webber (Centre for Agri-Environment Research, School of Agriculture, University of Reading) – Alleyway cover cropping and mulching)

Paul Cobb (CFE) – Pollinators, greening and stewardship

 

The event will take place on Tuesday 12 July 2016. Meet at 2.30 at the packhouse at Chandler & Dunn Ltd, Goldstone Farm, Ash CT3 2DY.

 

A BBQ will be provided on site, generously funded by University of Worcester and NFU.
