East Malling Trust
The Trust was established, in its current legal form, in April 2010 although its origins go back to the 1930s. It is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.
The primary objective of the Trust is ‘the advancement of science for public benefit, primarily through the support of research and development, particularly in the fields of horticultural and other plant-based disciplines’.
Today, the East Malling Trust is a leading private funder of horticultural research in the UK.
Its governing body, the Trust Board, consists of a group of Trustees led by Chairman Oliver Doubleday, who have backgrounds in academia, business and horticulture but share a common interest in supporting horticultural research. The day-to-day affairs of the Trust are managed by a small number of staff at its head office at Bradbourne House, East Malling, Kent.
The Trust has two other fully-owned subsidiary companies:
- East Malling Limited is concerned with the commercial exploitation of the Trust’s physical assets.
- Bradbourne House Limited is concerned solely with the use of Bradbourne House as a wedding and corporate hospitality venue.
