Resistance to powdery mildew in cultivated strawberry

EMR, Driscoll’s Genetics Ltd and Berry Gardens growers are working in an industry-led project to identify and characterise the genetic basis of strawberry powdery mildew resistance in the octoploid cultivated strawberry. Members of the Harrison lab and the strawberry breeding teams at EMR and Driscoll’s genetics have measured field resistance to mildew in a segregating population of strawberry plants in multiple sites around Europe. This trait information has been statistically linked to genetic variants segregating in this population and markers in candidate genes (suitable for marker assisted breeding) are now being developed. The outcome of this project will lead to more resistant strawberry varieties being made available to UK growers, which in turn will lead to reduced fungicide applications and lower costs for growers and consumers.
