Rubus breeding consortium launched
The East Malling Rubus Breeding Consortium (EMRBC) was launched at EMR on 21 September. Under a five year agreement worth £600k, existing genetic material at EMR, including parent breeding lines and advanced selections already in trial, will be taken forward with a view to generating improved ‘traditional’ varieties as well as varieties with very novel characteristics. The first release under the new agreement, a raspberry with superior fruit quality characteristics, is being planned for 2017.
Members of the international consortium include: Spanish fruit producer organisation, Onubafruit; Swiss plant propagators, Lubera; UK fruit producer WB Chambers and East Malling Services, the commercial division of EMR.
Raspberry breeding at EMR has previously been underpinned by EMR and the East Malling Trust.
