Fountain gains BETA Environmental Management qualification

Congratulations to NIAB EMR Entomologist, Dr Michelle Fountain, who has just completed the BASIS ‘BETA Environmental Management’ course.

Dr Fountain, who first joined the research team at East Malling in 2005, is at the forefront of developing integrated pest control systems across a wide range of fruit crops and integrating effective pollination to increase yield and fruit quality.

This additional qualification, which also featured an ‘Environmental Specialism’ is a benefit to both Dr Fountain and NIAB EMR as the course is designed to advise and help land owners to protect and further improve farming landscapes and habitats to enhance UK biodiversity and species protection, whilst providing benefits for farming and food production.

NIAB EMR Managing Director, Prof Mario Caccamo, commented, “The production of food and the environment we live in are inextricably linked. We cannot address the food security agenda and increase production at the expense of the wider environmental and ecosystem services upon which we ultimately depend upon. Feeding society and having a healthy environment requires scientists in this field to have a full understanding of all the issues impacting on both areas. Congratulations to Michelle for her hard work and involvement in working to gain this qualification.”
