BRADBOURNE HOUSE
AND GARDENS OPEN DAY
Sunday 29 April 2007
2-5pm
For the only time in 2007, Bradbourne House and
Gardens will be open to the public
in aid of the National Gardens Scheme, on a date which we hope will
coincide with the arrival of blossom on the gardens fruit trees.
The Hatton Fruit Garden, formerly the
walled kitchen gardens of Bradbourne House, consists of demonstration
fruit tree plantings of particular interest to amateurs. Originally
planted in 1945 and inspired by the fruit plantings in Louis XIV kitchen
garden at Versailles, the fruit garden was set up as a memorial to the
art of tree training and pruning and as a source of information for
gardening enthusiasts. The concept was to establish a fruit garden with
trees planted at appropriate spacings to show the economic use of
ground, without over-crowding. Although selective tree removal and
replanting has occurred, many examples of the original planting remain.
Staff from East Malling Research will show
how the fruit trees have been trained and pruned to produce cordons,
espaliers, goblets, pyramids, fans, arches, crowns, le bateau, arcure
forms etc. In fact, 25 different training methods are on display. In
addition, there are examples of 47 varieties of apple, 28 varieties of
pear and individuals of medlar, nectarine, peach and fig.
Bradbourne House, a privately owned, Grade
1 listed house will also be opened to visitors. The house displays
excellent examples of Queen Anne period architecture disguising an
original Tudor period house, with fine rooms, halls, staircases and a
unique collection of watercolours and portraits.
There will also be displays by scientists
from the world renowned horticultural research organisation, East
Malling Research, plus plant sales, music, childrens quiz and
refreshments.
Admission £3.00. Children (under 16)
free. Entrance on New Road, East Malling, Kent off the A20.
For further information, please contact Dr Ursula
Twomey, East Malling Research, New Road, East Malling, Kent ME19 6BJ;

On 18 June, EMRA and HDC
are holding their annual Strawberry Walk at which growers will be able
to see the most promising performers within the HDC trial SF 21b. This
walk takes place at East Malling Research (EMR) and is being held at
6 pm in the evening to allow the maximum number of
growers to attend during this busy time of year.
The HDC trial at EMR
The HDC preliminary
strawberry variety trials (SF 21b) are organised to allow EMR to assess
a range of selections from their main season breeding programme.
Currently, a major aim of this programme is to find a replacement for
Florence, with a later cropping season than Elsanta, good fruit quality
and resistance to pests and diseases. The programme is also seeking to
produce high quality varieties to replace the early and mid-season
varieties currently used. A further aim is to develop varieties with
strong resistance to verticillium wilt and powdery mildew to reduce the
reliance on chemical pesticides and soil fumigation.
This walk gives you the
opportunity to view and taste the most interesting new selections from
the programme.
The breeders welcome feedback from growers and others involved in the
soft fruit industry and those attending will be asked to complete data
sheets giving their opinion on the new selections. This is the
opportunity for HDC Members to influence decisions on which lines will
ultimately be released as new named varieties and distributed by Meiosis
Ltd.
David Simpson and Adam Whitehouse, EMR, will present results from the
trials and will be available to answer questions and discuss the
varieties.
Members of EMRA or HDC who wish to attend
this event, should contact the HDC at the address below by

Irrigation Open Day for Hardy Nursery
Stock Growers
East
Malling Water Centre
11
September 2007
The HDC and EMRA are organising an open
day for hardy nursery stock growers at the East Malling Water Centre on
11th September 2007. The day which will be hosted by East
Malling Research (EMR), will be targeted at growers of container stock
and will focus on improving the management of irrigation systems and
improved efficiency of water use on nurseries.
Part of the day will feature the results of work undertaken on project
HNS 122 (Container nursery stock irrigation: demonstration and promotion
of best practice). This project is in its third and final year and has
been undertaken at the East Malling Water Centre that was developed by
EMR for the purpose of this project. A number of different irrigation
systems have been set up to incorporate Rotoframes, MP2000s, Efford
sandbeds, gantries, gravel beds, mypex beds and sensory equipment to
compare and contrast water use and application efficiency of all the
different systems currently used in commercial practice.
In addition, talks on related subjects will also be included to cover
the water use monitoring scheme, water auditing, water filtration and
the manipulation of copper in irrigation water as a component of
integrated crop protection (Project HNS 142). An overseas speaker from
Germany will also present commercial experience of the use of gantry
systems for irrigation. With trade stands and free lunch included, there
will be an opportunity for growers to exchange ideas and swap
information.
The programme for the day is set out below:
